Microsoft shocked and awed everyone today with the unveiling of controller-free entertainment. That’s right kids, in case you missed the awesomness that came from Microsoft this afternoon at E3, there will soon be a new reason for your family to be afraid of your videogames. The thought of a Wii Remote flying through your TV has become slightly less significant, now that Xbox may have your fist or foot flying through it instead.

Project Natal (pronounced “nuh-tall”) has been unveiled to the public for the first time ever, and is said to be a revolutionary new way to play. No controllers were required for the demonstrations that took place on stage, and no controllers will be needed in your home either. Sound’s pretty crazy to us too! But Minority Report was on to something when Tom Cruise was streaming through pictures on his super high tech computer, and it was only a matter of time before someone else caught on to the idea.
See a ball? You’ll be able to kick it, hit it, trap it or catch it. Microsoft says, “If you know how to move your hands, shake your hips, or speak, you and your friends can jump into the fun. The only experience needed is life experience.” Bold words for video games, bridging the gap between hardcore and true casual gamers.
Unlike other devices, that don’t usually work out too well (I’m looking at you vision camera), Project Natal’s sensor is not light-dependent. It can recognize you just by looking at your face, and supposedly doesn’t react to key words, but actually understands what you’re saying. Tracking full body movements in 3-D and responding to commands, directions and even a shift in emotion in your voice. Scary that our Xbox 360s will be able to do all of this really.

Want to log onto Xbox LIVE? Step in front of the sensor and your 360 will recognize you, instantly logging you in. “The next step in interactive entertainment is to make the controller disappear,” said Steven Spielberg, visionary director and producer. “With ‘Project Natal,’ we’ll see games that bring everyone together through technology that actually recognizes us.”
