
Rapture is an enticing place for gamers: Its an underwater Art Deco city knee-deep in psychopaths looking for original ways to die. The question that comes to mind today as multiplayer screens were revealed is whether fans of the original care enough for what many are considering a disastrous return to Rapture. Forums across the net are piping hot with predictions of failure on behalf of 2k Marin. Considering that the that the original game’s auteur Ken Levine isn’t involved at all in the sequel, one would imagine that the insurmountable pressure on the developers at 2k Marin is rather daunting. Fortunately, they have had enough foresight to dole out the multiplayer responsibilities to Digital Extremes while they try their hand at recreating the magic that Levine brought to the table with his team at 2K Boston for the single player experience. Despite “hmmphs” and eye-rolling from fans over the Levine-less sequel, there is a bright side to the story: BioShock 2’s campaign is being helmed by director Jordan Thomas, who was the genius behind the entire Sander Cohen/ Fort Frolic phase of the first game. Given the twisted and brilliant sadism of Thomas’s original contribution, the naysayers may be quieted quickly come November as they scream in delight and/or terror with every thrill.

Set a decade past the events of BioShock, the sequel’s story involves little girls getting kidnapped off the coast by a horrible monster and you, as a prototype Big Daddy, have awoken and head down to Rapture to take care of business with an invisible foe. The character design for the “Original Big Daddy” has yet to be revealed, but it is known that 1) You are not the lumbering monster from the original game. You are actually quite nimble, but not heavily armored 2) You will be able to adapt your weapon set, using the Big Daddy drill, Rivet Gun and more along with your plasmids and 3) Your character was stuck on the surface during the events that wrecked rapture as well as during Jack’s adventure. The team at 2K is promising grand new locations and some familiar stops as you unravel the layers of Rapture.
