Games based on movies are typically a disappointment to the general video game audience. They exist mostly as a form of advertisement for the movie itself. Developers are strictly limited in their creative freedom and rushed by strict deadlines. It is not often that a game based on a movie is ever taken seriously.
That being said, The Godfather II is well passed the deadline for coinciding with the movie’s release. The second Godfather movie was released a full 35 years ago. Thus, unlike most games based on movies, EA Redwood Shores is not limited by the normal challenges faced by movie based games. Given the mild success of the Original Godfather movie-game, The Godfather II should play much better then other such games.
The Godfather II is part open world sandbox, part strategy game. On the road from thug to don you will have to hit the streets, brutally eliminating the competition and gaining support. Along the way you will gain associates such as medics and safe crackers who you must take care of and utilize wisely. With a variety of tactics and a lot of good old fashion thuggery you will climb your way to the top of the underworld.
It isn’t likely that The Godfather II will hang amongst the likes of the Grand Theft Auto games. But if organised crime is your kind of thing, it should wet your apatite and give you something to do as you wait around for Mafia II.
